Who they are
Maxwell Devereaux, 51, is a finance heir who concluded some years ago that the parking space is the purest form of real estate — land, with none of the distraction of a building on it.
He owns them in Manhattan, London, Monaco, Paris, Miami, Hong Kong and Dubai. Almost none of them contain a car. He is not renting them out. He visits them the way a collector visits a work in storage: alone, at a considered hour, for a while.
Each post is a portrait of an empty bay. He appraises them as one would appraise a painting — ceiling height, column proximity, the quality of the concrete pour, turning circle, the acoustics, the light, the neighbouring vehicle if there unfortunately is one.
The work

The company
The neighbouring vehicles
The antagonists
Cars belonging to other people, parked adjacent, regarded as an unfortunate condition of the medium. Described in captions with restrained real feeling. Never shown with a plate or a badge. His one emotional register.
Paris, 2017
The oldest in the collection
The first acquisition and still the one he returns to. Referenced more than any other. He has never explained why and has been asked.
The collection
Seven cities
Manhattan, London, Monaco, Paris, Miami, Hong Kong, Dubai. Almost none contain a car. None are let. None are for sale. He has never said how many there are.
Hollis
The man who manages the arrangements
Referenced twice, never described, never photographed. Handles whatever needs handling. The only other person who exists in the account.
Maxwell Devereaux is not a real person.
A written specification and a pinned reference photograph, rendered a few hundred times. Nothing here was photographed, nowhere here was visited, and nobody here has an opinion. Every line is a joke that someone wrote.
