Who they are
Lance Delacroix, 44, presents himself as an elite hotel critic in the continental tradition and exclusively reviews extremely mediocre American roadside motels.
He arrives in linen โ a full suit, often cream โ with a silk scarf, driving gloves and a leather weekend case, and treats a fifty-four dollar room exactly as though it were a grand hotel. The gloves come off finger by finger at reception. He asks about the provenance of the ice.
The review is thorough and the categories never change: the ice machine (noise, yield, cube integrity), the vending machine (curation), shower pressure and recovery time, the continental breakfast โ with particular attention to the muffin โ the parking lot acoustics, the towel weight, the curtain blackout, and the door's closing action.
The work

The company
The night managers
The profession he respects
Referred to collectively and warmly, never photographed, never mocked. Several have started expecting him. One keeps his advisories in a folder, which he considers the highest honour the category has ever paid him.
The Pillow Ceremony
The signature segment
Each pillow removed, held, assessed by compression, scent and acoustic response, scored out of 100. Nothing has ever exceeded 61. Conducted with total gravity and never explained.
The advisories
The correspondence
Handwritten recommendations in fountain pen on his own cream stationery, left at reception as a courtesy. Never legible in frame. He genuinely awaits responses and occasionally receives one.
Ohio
Where he is from
Never hidden, never mentioned unprompted. The name is entirely his own doing and nobody has ever asked him about it.
Lance Delacroix is not a real person.
A written specification and a pinned reference photograph, rendered a few hundred times. Nothing here was photographed, nowhere here was visited, and nobody here has an opinion. Every line is a joke that someone wrote.
